Chapter
Seven
NANCY RACED TO THE door of Adam’s room and threw it open, hoping to surprise Adam’s attacker. In one smooth motion, she ran into the room and assumed a karate stance, ready to strike.
Nancy quickly looked around the room—and immediately felt foolish. Adam was sitting up in the bed. Nancy immediately saw he was in no danger. He looked angry, not afraid.
Adam’s agent, Larry Sen, whom Nancy recognized from the Reverb opening, was sitting in a chair next to the bed. He looked angry, too.
Nancy took a deep, calming breath and straightened up, trying to regain some dignity.
“Who are you?” Larry demanded. “I’m going to call Security!”
“Don’t bother. She’s a private detective,” Adam said.
“Did you learn that dramatic entrance from television or something?” Larry asked Nancy dryly.
“I heard Adam yelling,” Nancy explained. “I thought he was in danger.”
“I hired Nancy to help me figure out what’s going on at Reverb,” Adam put in.
Larry sighed impatiently. “Really, Adam. Isn’t hiring a private detective a bit cloak-and-dagger? If you’d bothered to ask me my opinion, I would have told you I thought it was a stupid idea.”
“I didn’t ask your opinion because I don’t care what you think,” Adam told him. “It’s none of your business.”
There was a knock on the door.
“Come in!” Adam yelled.
The door opened a crack, and Bess practically tiptoed inside. She had waited outside the door so that she could call for help, if necessary. Now her gaze jumped from Adam to Larry to Nancy. “Is everything all right?” she asked.
“No, everything is not all right,” Adam said testily. “Larry here thinks he can run my life. And I’m trying to make him understand he’s my agent, not my mother.”
Larry turned back to Adam, having lost interest in Bess and Nancy. “I’m not trying to run your life,” he told Adam coldly. “I’m merely offering you some business advice. Last time I checked, that was my job.”
Adam rolled his eyes. “Don’t worry about me, Larry. I have no doubt Reverb is going to be wildly successful and extremely profitable.”
Bess shot Nancy an uncomfortable look. She nodded toward the door and raised her eyebrows.
Nancy knew Bess was suggesting that they should give Adam and Larry some privacy while they discussed business. Part of Nancy agreed with Bess. But the detective in her knew she might learn something important by eavesdropping. And since Larry and Adam hadn’t asked her to leave, she decided to stay put. With a quick shake of her head she signaled that Bess should do the same.
“Well, I don’t know how you can be so sure,” Larry told Adam. “You don’t know anything about restaurants. And so far, you’ve managed only to smoke out your customers onto the street. And end up in the hospital, of course.”
“I know how to make people happy,” Adam said, his tone smug.
Nancy had to fight a desire to laugh out loud. She had to admit that her friends’ impressions of Adam had been on the mark. He was awfully full of himself.
